AUSTRALIA’S ECONOMIC STRENGTHS: A PERSPECTIVE ON PROSPERITY
By Amelia Paullo
Andrew Hauser, Australia’s new RBA Deputy Governor, recently addressed the Australian Economic Forum in Sydney with a speech titled “Strangers in Paradise”. In his optimistic message, he reminded Australians of their prosperous economic position amidst global challenges. Having lived in Australia for six months after coming from the UK, where economic growth has been stagnant since the Global Financial Crisis, Hauser says that “the cross-country gap feels very real”.
Australia ranks among the top nations globally in terms of per capita income, exceeding $US60,000 ($89,800 AUD) according to the World Bank. Currently, Australia’s GDP per capita of $US64,700 stands significantly higher than Japan ($US33,800), the UK ($US48,900), Germany ($US52,700), and vastly exceeds our northern neighbour Indonesia ($US4,900).
Hauser identified three key factors that have been instrumental to Australia’s modern prosperity which are:
- An unusually diverse range of natural endowments, below ground, above ground and beyond the seas.
- Strong but adaptable pro-growth institutions – political, legal, macro and microeconomic, and financial stability.
- A longstanding, welcoming environment for foreign investment.

Many countries have resource endowments of some kind but what’s different about Australia is that it seems to have the full set. The diversity of which can be seen in the evolving nature of Australia’s exports over the last 200 years. Importantly for the future, Australia has large shares of global reserves of many minerals critical to “new world” technologies as can be seen in the below graph.

However, Hauser cautioned that strong resources alone do not ensure prosperity; rather, Australia’s adaptable and pro-growth institutions, including its political and legal frameworks, have been integral. The country’s macroeconomic policies, highlighted by a flexible exchange rate regime over the last four decades, further underpin its economic resilience.
Looking ahead, Hauser emphasized the importance of global institutional stability and sound policy decisions for Australia’s continued prosperity.
Australia currently holds a privileged position among nations, supporting a high standard of living. To sustain this, it is essential to recognize and capitalize on the fundamental attributes that have brought us to this advantageous position.
