On Friday 25th October, we hosted a client dinner at Leonda by the Yarra. We were delighted to have many long-standing and loyal clients in attendance, as well as some newer clients of the firm. Our special guest speaker on the evening was Nick Green. Nick is one of Australia’s Olympic heroes and is well known as a member of the rowing greats, the “Oarsome Foursome”. A fantastic night was enjoyed by all with Nick’s Olympic stories an absolute highlight!
On Monday 2nd September 2019, we held our Estate Planning lunch seminar at Leonda by the Yarra on this important topic. Our special guest presenters Jennifer Dixon, Practice Leader and Jessica Latimer, Special Counsel in Elder Financial Abuse from Moores Legal.
The seminar focused on a range of Estate planning topics including, Wills, Significance of Asset Ownership, What assets are covered, Will – importance, roles and application Powers of Attorney, Superannuation and Elder Financial Abuse.
This seminar was extremely popular and the feedback was excellent. Everyone appreciated the opportunity to attend such a valuable and insightful presentation.

We held a Quarterly Business lunch on Wednesday 7th August 2019 at Leonda By the Yarra on the Magellan Global Funds. This topic was extremely popular amongst our clients and their guests, with the session being fully booked.
Our special guest presenter is Stefan Marcionetti who is the Portfolio Manager of the Magellan Global Trust (MGG).
Magellan’s Global Funds continue to perform exceptionally well. The flagship offering of Magellan, the Magellan Global Fund returned 17.6% for the 12-month period ending 31st May 2019, against the Global share market index (MSCI World TR Index) which returned 8.9%. Since inception in 2007, Magellan has been the top performing International Share Trust in Australia returning 11.9% per annum, significantly outperforming the index, which has returned 6.5% per annum over the same period.
In our opinion, Magellan is one of the finest Fund Managers in the world. The Magellan Global Fund invests in a concentrated group of some of the biggest companies in the world. At present, the top 10 holdings of the Fund include well known companies such as Apple, Alphabet (Google), Facebook, Microsoft, Visa, MasterCard and Starbucks.
In Stefan’s presentation, he analysed the current economic cycle, discussed some of the key thematics of Magellan’s Global portfolios including technology and the emerging markets, and also deep dive into a couple of the companies Magellan owns and why.
Many of our clients are investors in the Magellan Global Fund and found this session of great interest and extremely worthwhile. We were very fortunate to have Stefan presenting on the day, looking “under the bonnet” of Magellan’s investment process and stock positions.

We held our first Quarterly Business Lunch for the year on “Navigating the Centrelink System” on Wednesday 10th April at Leonda by the Yarra. This topic was extremely popular amongst our clients and their guests, with the session being fully booked.
The presenters on the day were GFM advisers – James Malliaros, Paul Nicol and Patrick Malcolm.
The presentation provided an overview and an understanding of the Centrelink and Age Pension System including the very significant changes over the last few years, and recently the introduction of new income and asset test assessments for lifetime income streams which commence from 1 July 2019.

We held our 17th Annual Golf Day at Riversdale Golf Club on Friday 29th March 2019, attended by 86 of our keen golfing clients. The day started off perfectly with rain forecasted for the afternoon! Although the wind picked up, we were very fortunate for the rain to have held off.
It was great to have some new players join us this year. The course was in perfect condition, and we had some terrific prizes on offer. The competition was Ambrose, and the winning score on the day was 55.70, followed by the runners-up on 56.77.
We held our first seminar for the year on “Our Preferred Investments for 2019 and Why” on Wednesday 27th February at Riversdale Golf Club. This topic was extremely popular amongst our clients and their guests, with the seminar being fully booked.

We held our Market Update & Outlook for 2019 Seminar on Monday 19th November at Riversdale Golf Club. The seminar covered investment market activity during 2018 and the outlook for 2019.
Our special guest presenter on the night was James Holt, who is the Senior Investment Specialist for Equities at Perpetual Investments.
James is responsible for providing technical investment support to financial advisers and investors of Perpetual Investments’ equity funds. James has worked in the financial services industry for over eighteen years. Prior to joining Perpetual Investments in 2014, James was a Director and Investment Specialist with the Portfolio Management Group of Black Rock Australia and Senior Investment Specialist at Zurich Investments.
James discussed the key themes for 2019 and provided a detailed overview of the global economic backdrop, and how this is likely to affect investment markets over the next few years.

The seminar focused on a range of Estate planning topics including, Wills, Significance of Asset Ownership, Powers of Attorney and the Family Court. The session was informative and was well attended by 150 clients. The feedback was excellent, and some of the attendees have since taken action in getting their estate planning affairs in order.

As most would be aware, GFM hosts several educational seminars each year. We are very fortunate to have access to the portfolio managers of which our clients invest. These sessions are extremely popular as our clients have the opportunity to hear directly from the portfolio manager and ask questions. The attendees do ask some very good questions!
On Monday 30th July, we had our special guest presenter Nick Greenway, Portfolio Manager for the Ironbark Karara Australian Small Companies Fund present to our clients. The feedback was extremely positive with attendees commenting on how well Nick explained the Ironbark Karara process of buying small companies.

On the 9th of May, we had a full audience of investors listening to our special guest presenters Arik Star, Portfolio Manager of Ellerston Global Investments (EGI) and Mary Manning, Portfolio Manager of Ellerston Asian Investments (EAI).
